How to Score Well in Data-Based Questions (DBQ) in A-Level Physics

  • Answer the Question Carefully 

Physical tuition helps you develop the skills needed to tackle DBQs confidently. First, always read the question carefully.

 Identify what data, conditions, and variables are given, and determine what is required (explain, calculate, compare, etc.). Misreading details or units often causes unnecessary mistakes under pressure.

Try this question (Mechanics—Work, Energy & Power):

A car of mass 1 200 kg accelerates from rest to 20 m/s in 5 s. Using the data, calculate the average power output of the car during this interval and discuss what factors could reduce the actual power delivered.

 

  • Work with the Data Systematically

When working with tables, graphs or charts, handle the data systematically. Convert units if needed, look for trends, and pay attention to anomalies or deviations. Explain what the data suggests (e.g. proportional, linear, plateau) rather than relying on vague statements. Quantitative backing (ratios, slopes) strengthens your answers.

Try this question (Electricity & Magnetism—Current of Electricity):

A graph shows how resistance of a metal wire changes with temperature from 20 °C to 100 °C. From the graph, determine the proportionality between resistance and temperature, explain why resistance increases, and suggest two experimental errors that could affect the data.

 

  • Apply Physics Concepts

Applied physics concepts must be linked to the data. Don’t just describe what the data shows; explain why it behaves that way using physics laws—Newton’s laws, kinetic theory, electric fields, etc. Use correct terminology. Physical tuition helps drill this skill, especially with past-paper and challenging questions that combine topics.

Try this question (Thermal Physics—First Law & Ideal Gases):

In an experiment, a gas is compressed at a constant temperature, and then heated at constant volume. Data shows pressure, volume and temperature changes. Use the data to explain how and why internal energy changes, relate work done, and compute the heat absorbed by the gas.

 

  • Use Prelims and Timed Tests to gauge pacing

Simulating timed exam conditions is another benefit of physical tuition. Mock tests help you manage time, decide how much effort to spend on different sections, and practise maintaining accuracy under pressure. Also, human feedback (from tutors) is essential—pinpointing exactly where explanations are weak, where misinterpretations arise, or where assumptions are made incorrectly.

Try this question (Modern Physics—Radioactive Decay & Nuclear Physics):

Data is given for a radioactive isotope showing the  number of undecayed nuclei over time.

Determine the half-life from the data, plot a decay curve, explain what happens when the sample is diluted, and describe one practical application of a known isotope.
